Aviation Insurance
Aviation insurance is a highly specialized type of insurance that covers the unique risks associated with operating, owning, and maintaining aircraft and other aviation-related businesses.
It is distinct from other transport insurance due to the high values of the assets involved and the catastrophic potential of aviation accidents. A standard aviation policy is generally divided into two main sections: Hull Coverage (for the aircraft itself) and Liability Coverage (for damages and injuries to third parties).
Hull Coverage (Physical Damage)
Hull insurance covers the physical loss or damage to the aircraft, including the fuselage, wings, engines, instruments, and installed equipment. It is typically written on an "All Risks" basis, meaning it covers any loss not specifically excluded.
Hull War & Allied Perils:
A separate, critical extension that covers damage resulting from war, hijacking, terrorism, civil commotion, and sabotage, as these perils are almost always excluded from standard Hull All Risks policies.
Liability Coverage (Third-Party and Passenger)
Liability coverage is often mandated by law and protects the insured against legal claims arising from an accident.
Other Specialized Coverages
Hangar Keepers Liability:
Purchased by businesses that store, repair, or service aircraft. It covers their liability for damage to a client's aircraft while it is in their care, custody, or control.
Aviation Products Liability:
Covers manufacturers or distributors of aircraft parts against claims of injury or damage caused by a defect in their products.
Loss of License Insurance:
Provides financial support to pilots and flight crew members who lose their operating license due to medical reasons, preventing them from working.
Non-Owned Aircraft Liability:
Covers a company or individual for liability arising from the use of an aircraft they do not own (e.g., employees renting or borrowing a plane for business).
